He started training with Tony Atlas, who worked at a gym Robinson's cousin owned, while in high school. He started wrestling in 2006 while attend the University of Southern Maine.
Trivia
Early in his career, he was involved in erotic, but not sexual, gay wrestling videos, which he's since claimed as the reason he wasn't hired by the WWE after Tough Enough.
